Here
the children are encouraged to make music with their modern (school)
instruments
along side traditional instruments which they have learnt. They
are taught
to examine the similarities and differences between the instruments.
For example the Balafon from West Africa is similar to the Xylophone.
The Kora to the harp and the African drum to the modern day drum.
The Musical Migration project finishes with a Concert-Party,
(an old Ghanaian cabaret tradition of entertainment, socialising
and food) where the young people will display what they have
learnt to the rest of the school, their parents and the rest
of the community.
The young people have also had the opportunity
to participate in local festivals such as the Anti Racist festival
in Greenwich.
