An exciting music production outreach
workshop, targeting young music makers aged between 14 and 25 providing
them with an opportunity to develop their skills and opportunities
in the music industry. Unlike other music production workshops
we introduce African musical instruments for them to use in their
music
making, getting them to connect to the musical heritage of Africa
and providing the opportunity for young people to explore other
musical forms.
Through the introduction of African musical instruments, the young
people will find out more about Africa, its musical heritage and
its people.
The workshops comprise of
Tuition in a variety of instruments e.g. Djembe, Kora, Balafon etc.
Exploring regional African music genres: Traditional
and Contemporary
Discovering what their counterparts are producing
across Africa and Europe.
Learning how to record live instruments.
Working with professional
musicians and producers.
In the past our workshops have been led by leading musicians, artists
and producers from the music industry.
The workshops can also be incorporated within most standard music
production courses as a module in Contemporary African music.
In March 2005 participants from this workshop performed their work
at our Something to Celebrate:Live at the Royal Festival Hall. This
event was part of the Africa Remix Exhibition at the Hayward Gallery
and was billed as the pre concert to the Dizzee Rascal and Tony Allen
concert that took place in the main hall.
